China has a big problem about being first. If you win one major sporting event you are expected to win every time.  Two good examples are:

Liu Xiang - Great athlete. Won gold in Athens for the hurdles. But is expected to win every time he runs.

Li Na - Won a tennis grand slam. she hasnt won a grand slam since her win and people are pissed cause she cannot do it...

Small matter of approximately 1 - 4 million RMB! I do a presentation for those at my school considering UK universities, I pick three subjects and the top three UK universities in each subject. On average a top UK university will cost about:

Tuition costs - 20,000 GBP per annum so 3 yr degree - 60,000

    Books and course work    ...

I don't think I fit into any of those categories.

For me, I have been here long enough for the honeymoon phase to be a distant memory.  I have a Chinese wife and 2 small kids.  While I love a lot of things about my life here, I do realize the many, many problems this country has but get frustrated knowing nothing I do or say will ever change any of it.

I am like a newbie compared to most of you, only 3.5 years. But it as most of you say. I was intrigued by the differences the first year, and the minor annoyances of being cheated didnt change my perception much, just seems like minor annoyances.

But after the while, and with the consistency of it, as well as my language skills improving, all those things have become much...

Yes they do. Apparently, the position of the bump can tell if it'll be a boy or girl. If the bump is pointing up then it's likely to be a girl, if it points downwards or hangs low in general then it might be a boy. I've also heard that women who eat and drink a lot of acidic foods are likely to give birth to a girl, while alkaline foods tend to make baby boys.

Nationalism feeds xenophobia in every country.  Thinking your country is the best demotivates you to learn about other countries.  It also leads you to believe that other customs are silly and not to be respected.  This ignorance generates fear, and the lack of respect generates racism.

The most xenophobic idiots in America are the same idiots who think it...

Mmmmmh no it's in the Chinese culture to avoid coming out with a clear 'sorry', especially on the part of girls. My girlfriend confirmed this to me when I confronted her with the same issue i.e. failure to say 'sorry'. Told me, generally in China a girl is not expected to utter a 'sorry' to the person she is in a relationship with. But get this - the fact that it's part of the culture doesn't...

The doctor's appointment for your work and residence permit will be to obtain a health certificate, he or she will not attend any private matters, and when I did it, it was all with nurses and technicians, no doctor.

I will assume all your prescriptions will be in English, so here will be just about worthless since not too many clerks at drugstores would be able to read...

Large population base. Targeted identification programs and funding for large amounts of junior athletes to train long hours from an early age (until they are just as quickly discarded). They excel in many minority sports that require large amounts of practice such as diving. gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, shooting etc. Sports which have little chance of making money as a...

I use QQ (international version), because almost all people here uses it, and second reason - QQi have built-in translator, that works just fine, and helps to communicate with those who don't know the languages that I know...

On principal I think the majority of Chinese still have something of a disliking for the Japanese, but as much as people are quick to make generalizations about other nations, they seem equally capable of suspending those same judgements when meeting a person of that same race, as in the case of your friend. I had a good Japanese friend who was treated decently during his...

First of all, China has always had a gender imbalance. The "more men than women" is not a direct result of the One Child Policy, and even historically there has been a gender imbalance in China because of the practice of female infanticide and tendency to not feed daughters during famines.

Secondly, some people prioritize other things over finding a mate. China has a lot...

if both parents of a baby born in China are foreigners, the baby will not be a Chinese citizen, so you must register the baby with the E,bassy of your country and request immediately a passport.  with the new passport issued, then you go to PSB and apply for a residence permit for the baby.

According to information provided by the People's Republic of China, a child born in China...

Because it's a competitive world and they want the best for them. Not saying I agree with the amount of work so many kids here have to do, but I think that's the main reason. Kind of like Michael Jackson's dad, pushing him so hard. Many people probably thought "Yeh, but look what it got him." Then of course there are the shit parents who just want their kid out the house, and of the...

Yes, you can. If you have an iphone you can download an app called Yaoyao zhaoche 摇摇招车 (http://www.yyzhaoche.com/). Through the app, you choose the car model, time and pick-up point and they will promptly come and collect you. And they're actually 20% cheaper than normal cabs!

I agree with Guilin Raf.  Do your homework ahead of time and quote them a competitive salary.  Having worked in HR as a hiring manager there are two reasons why they might ask you this question.  First they want to know how you value yourself.  Asking too little is a sign of your low self opinion or your inexperience in the field.  Second, they want to know if they can...

As posted on the website of the Chinese Embassy in UK, the following is valid from about mid January of 2012.

Since 16 January 2012 onwards, applicants applying for tourist and family visit visa should supplement the following supporting documents:

    1. Invitation letter from a Chinese organization or a permanent...

    My personal comparison:

    Security:

US - Invasive, degrading and run by a bunch of power hungry morons.  And it is a complete slap in the face to the personal freedoms the country is supposedly built on.

China - Less invasive, run by people who are actually nicer than the US monkeys and faster.  Yes, if you mess with them you will be going down...

I have had one for over one year now, and they do perform a service for the user, except when it rains.......

But if you are considering to buy one, better learn a few rules of usage that have helped me.

1.- do not speed, cruising at 20 to 30 kms will take you there safely, with plenty reaction time.

2.- avoid riding in a group, locals have difficulty driving straight....

I got married here back in 2006 and as an English guy really had very little idea of what was going to happen at the time.

It really starts a few days before with the photos. We spent a day at the studio having various pictures taken in various forms of clothing all supplied by the photography studio. Some photos are taken in house and others were outside at a couple of local parks....
