Q: Should a Chinese woman keep her mouth closed unless spoken to?
In traditional Chinese culture, yes. Back in the old days women were not valued very highly. But this is the 21st century.
Well, the dudes always say 男人是天 and the young ones make a big show of publicly putting their girls in their places, but it seems like it's the women running the household at the end of the day. There's lots of domestic violence towards women, though, and I've had neighbours who bicker and smash things till two in the morning.
I dunno seems like a huge war of the sexes here.
Men or women should keep their mouths shut if they want to belittle or abuse people for no good reason or talk crap in general. But in this day people of either sex should be incouraged to speak their mind freely on issues that are of interest or concern to them. Most of all humour should be included where possible and appropriate.
Mr GB where do you get this question from? Should you shut your mouth? How do you feel, come on get it together we aren't doing a history lesson are we??

It's a question so I can be informed. I have seen a large difference between 'city women' and 'village women' so I would like to know if there is a norm or if there are two seperate norms. Try not to spit the dummy when answering a question and think it through because you just make yourself look bad. Whether or not I should keep my mouth shut isn't subject to debate (yet) and off topic. I merely questioned if that is the way in 'village China'.

GB your question wasn't specific at all, that's why I answered that way. I'm not sure what parts of China you have been to, but women talk as openly and freely as the men in the villages and the cities, from what I've encountered.
